Group interviews can be overwhelming to many people. Not only do you have to go through the interview process, but you are also competing with the other potential candidates in person as well. You don’t want to say too little or too much, so you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed and nervous. We don't blame you!

But with these easy steps you will be able to reduce your nerves about a group interview, and make an outstanding impression on your potential employer.  

Research, Research, Research!

Before any interview, group or individual, the first thing you should do is research the company. Decide if this company is the right fit for you! Research the company's values, culture and potential for employee growth. Taking the time to research a company before an interview shows that you care about the position you are being interviewed for and demonstrates your ability to critically analyze and use information.

For example, I had a interview with Nordstrom a couple of months ago and when they asked why I would want to work there, I was able to reference terminology that they used throughout their website and within their company values to answer my questions. For example, after reading their company mission statement, I was able to articulate how I also valued customer service and how important and valuable it would be for me personally to learn from a customer service monster like Nordstrom.  

Dress to Impress:

What you wear to an interview is highly crucial, this is the first impression that the company gets to make of you in person. Especially within a group interview, overdressed is better then under. Wear something that professionally matches your personality and that will be able to make you stand out from the rest! Click here to see some of the do’s and don’ts for dressing for an interview!

Even if you are wearing black slacks/pants, mix it up with accessories! Men, add a watch or nice briefcase. Women, a nice bag and a pair of colorful heels can make the most basic outfit pop. 

 Greet Everyone in the Room:

Although you are competing with others for the same job, you should introduce yourself to everyone that is in your group interview. If hiring managers see that you are outgoing, friendly and even took the time to just say hello to your competitors it can really catch their attention!

 Ask Questions:

At the end of an interview the hiring manager may ask “Do any of you have any questions?” It’s insane how many group interviews I have been in and no one asks a question. You should have a question or two prepared, unless they have already answered it. By asking a question, especially in a group interview it shows that you are interested, dedicated, and want to learn more.

 Some example questions that you can ask your interviewer are “Where do you see this company within the next five years?” “How long have you been with the company and why?" “Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities this job entails?”

 Believe In Yourself:

        A lot of people who find out that they have a group interview may cancel because it can be nerve wrecking. Having a interview can already bring out your nerves but, having a interview with other people in the room too that can be more stressful at times. Understand though that you got this!

They set up an interview with you because they see the potential that you have to offer. Although there are other people in the room, don’t let that discourage you. Stay true to who you are, be calm and collective... YOU GOT THIS!
