At the CougsFirst! Westside Show in Seattle on May 29th, we wanted our booth to do more than hand out merchandise. We wanted to create an experience that felt interactive, memorable, and genuinely connected to the WSU Alumni community.

A Booth Activation Built for the Audience

We ended up deciding to host a custom koozie patch bar built specifically for the event.

We started with custom koozies featuring a fun front design and our company information on the bottom panel. From there, attendees got to make the piece their own by choosing from custom patches and heat transfer designs that we created for CougsFirst!, WSU Alumni, and anyone who loves Pullman, the Cougs, and that shared connection.

The result was an activation that felt personal from the start. It was branded, event-specific, and designed to give attendees something they actually wanted to keep.

Why the Koozie Patch Bar Worked

What made this activation stand out was how interactive it was. People didn't just grab a giveaway and move on. They stopped, looked through the patch options, debated which designs to choose, compared combinations with friends, and got to watch their koozie come to life right in front of them.

Our team heat pressed each design on-site, so attendees walked away with a fully custom takeaway in less than a minute. That quick turnaround made the experience even more fun. It gave people time to engage without creating a complicated process, and it showed how a simple product can become a memorable moment when it is personalized in real time.

From our perspective, that interaction created space for genuine conversation. While people waited in line, we had the chance to learn more about them, hear about their organizations, and talk about what they were planning for their own events, conferences, and trade show booths coming up.

And from the attendee perspective, we heard the same feedback again and again: this was fun, it felt different, and it was one of the best booth activations they had seen. Just as importantly, it helped people picture how they could do something similar for their own brand.

That is the power of doing something different with event merchandise. When you create an activation instead of simply offering a giveaway, your booth becomes a place people want to stop, participate, and remember.

The Follow-Up Matters Just as Much

The conversations did not end when the event was over. After CougsFirst!, we received a lot of questions about both the booth activation itself and our booth setup. That follow-up interest reinforced something we believe deeply: thoughtful event merchandise works best when it is part of a larger experience.

Because we created the activation and the booth display items ourselves, we were able to send a very intentional follow-up email to the attendee contacts we collected during the event. We shared more about the custom koozie patch bar, highlighted the display pieces used in our booth, explained how those same ideas could work for other brands and companies, and included a note of gratitude for the community we are proud to keep building relationships with.

For us, this was more than an event recap. It was a reminder that the right activation can create energy at the booth, spark meaningful conversations, and continue generating opportunity long after the show is over. If you want your event merchandise to do more than fill a swag bag, an interactive activation can help your brand leave a lasting impression.
